Burnaby farm launching harvest box season
Urban Digs Farm has launched its harvest box program for the season, with plans to make them available to the general public soon, after giving priority to returning members and people on its waitlist.
The program involves participants paying up front for a share of the upcoming crop from its South Burnaby and Delta farms. The money provides the farmers with the capital they need to plant and maintain it. At harvest time, customers receive a weekly box of produce and potentially other farm products such as honey, eggs and flowers.
"In addition to the traditional vegetable box, we are offering what we are calling the 'Beasty Box' which will be a weekly harvest box filled with all-natural, ethical, locally sourced meat," said Urban Digs Farm manager Julia Smith by email.
Some of the products in the boxes will come from other members of the Metro Vancouver City Farms Co-op. Goat cheese will come from Southlands Heritage Farm in Vancouver and the milk is from Burnaby-based Avalon Dairy. The eggs and some of the meat will come from Urban Digs' farm on Byrne Road and other farmers who meet its standards, Smith said, adding that Re-up BBQ in New Westminster will lead the butchery and all the meat processing, such as smoking and sausage making, will happen in their kitchen.
The farm is also recruiting volunteers and has plans to set up community garden plots for volunteers and customers who don't have their own gardens, she said.
