Burnaby applies to seize property through civil forfeiture
Burnaby RCMP have their sights set on properties it plans to seize through criminal and civil forfeiture of proceeds of crime.
It's in the process of seizing two North Burnaby homes and $20,000 in cash, through civil forfeiture after the property was seized during investigations of marijuana grow operations and dial-a-dope dealers in Burnaby, say Burnaby RCMP.
Civil forfeiture is separate from criminal law as it targets the property, not the offender, and does not depend on a criminal conviction or charges being laid. It is only considered after the criminal process is exhausted.
Police believe civil forfeiture is an effective law enforcement and crime prevention tool since it takes away the tools, cash flow and profit of the drug trade.
Forfeited property is used to support eligible victims and crime prevention programs.
"If you deal drugs or grow marihuana in Burnaby, we will be coming after the cash and tools you use to commit your crimes," said Burnaby RCMP Drug Section supervisor Sgt. Scott Rintoul in a press release. "The Burnaby Drug Section do not believe that people involved in the drug trade should be profiting from their illegal acts."
