Burnaby school district names new superintendent
The Burnaby school board has appointed Kevin Kaardal as the district's new chief executive officer and superintendent.
Kaardal has served as assistant superintendent in Burnaby for the past five years and before that worked for 21 years in public education in B.C. and Alberta.
He succeeds Claudio Morelli who retired on Aug. 31. Heather Hart had been acting superintendent since Sept. 1.
The appointment follows an extensive national search by consultants Odgers Berndtson.
“Our search process has shown that Kevin is the right person to provide the strong educational leadership that we have come to expect in our district," said board chair Larry Hayes, in a press release. "We look forward to Kevin’s increased contribution in advancing a vibrant and innovative environment for all of our learners, staff and community."
The board also announced the appointment of Gina Niccoli-Moen as deputy superintendent of schools.
She has worked for the Burnaby district for the past 22 years in increasingly senior roles, most recently as assistant superintendent for the past four years.
“It is indeed a strong statement about the quality of our professional staff in appointing Gina to this key senior leadership position," said Hayes. "With Gina, we are recognizing an individual from within our district who has clearly demonstrated a breadth of knowledge, dedication and passion over the years.”
Both Kaardal and Niccoli-Moen will assume their new responsibilities immediately.
