BTA endorses Burnaby NDP candidates
The Burnaby Teachers' Association (BTA) is endorsing Burnaby's four New Democrat candidates in the May 14 provincial election.
BTA delegates passed a motion to endorse incumbents Kathy Corrigan (Burnaby-Deer Lake) and Raj Chouhan (Burnaby-Edmonds) and first-time candidates Janet Routledge (Burnaby North) and Jane Shin (Burnaby-Lougheed).
The endorsement was based on factors including B.C. legislature records and responses to a BTA survey on policy positions, it said in a press release. The BTA says it tried to contact candidates from all the major parties but only those from the Green Party and NDP responded to the survey.
"The NDP responses were deemed most favourable to improved conditions for students (smaller class sizes) and a fair bargaining process," the release said.
BTA president James Sanyshyn said in the release that the endorsement is "a message to both our members and the public at large, informing them that the platform of the BC NDP aligns most with what teachers feel are the most important issues in education."
According to BTA policy, it does not contribute financially to any political party, Sanyshyn noted.
