Burnaby RCMP warn of brazen jewelry thieves
Burnaby RCMP is issuing a warning about a group of thieves who have been brazenly stealing valuable jewelry from people as they're wearing them in broad daylight.
The thefts have been reported throughout the Lower Mainland in recent weeks.
Dubbed "distraction theft," the cases involve victims, usually older and alone, who are approached by two or more suspects, usually a male and a female or two females.
They ask for directions or use some other excuse to start a conversation. They compliment the jewelry—mainly necklaces and rings—worn by the victims and compare them to other jewelry they show them. During this, the jewelry is switched and the suspects quickly escape with the victim's property.
The suspects are described as European-looking, with olive skin and dark hair. All suspects, both male and female, are heavy set and appear to be in the 40 to 45 year age range.
The public is being reminded to be aware of their surroundings when walking outdoors and be cautious of wearing jewelry in public.
Anyone with information on the thefts or suspects, or who believes they may have been a victim of such thefts, is asked to call Burnaby RCMP at 604-294-7922.
