Nationalism, when it suits
Re: Tanker debate sinks to a new low (BC Views, NewsLeader, May 9)
Tom Fletcher is right when he says the tanker debate sinks to a new low, and his op-ed piece is scraping the bottom of the barrel. Fletcher echoes the Harper Conservatives by attacking some environmental groups opposed to the Northern Gateway pipeline as being “U.S. Funded” and displaying a “pro-U.S.” bias.
Funny thing, in all the years reading Fletcher’s columns I don’t remember him having a problem with U.S. corporations funding the BC Liberals, or American funding of so called “think tanks” like the Fraser Institute.
I think the real hypocrisy isn’t the environmental groups opposing the Northern Gateway Project, it’s the sudden conversion of “free-market” conservatives (and liberals) to Canadian nationalism because it suits their ideology.
