Burnaby Hospital committee officially empowered
Re: MLA-led committee not official planning process for Burnaby Hospital: Corrigan (NewsLeader, June 15)
Contrary to the claim made by Burnaby Mayor Derek Corrigan, Minister of Health Mike de Jong did, in fact, officially empower the My Bby Hospital community consultation committee through the committee’s two MLA members.
What the Minister of Health empowered our committee to do was to seek out the ideas that really matter from the people on the ground: the patients and family members who use the hospital; the doctors and nurses who work in the hospital; the other staff who work in the hospital and keep it running; and anyone else who has seen or experienced something about the hospital that could potentially make it better.
The My Bby Hospital committee has been tasked with engaging the citizenry in a very direct and meaningful way using various communication pathways including social media (e.g., on Facebook www.facebook/mybbyhospital and Twitter @mybbyhospital).
Our committee isn’t looking exclusively for the big “macro” ideas so much as we are seeking ideas at the human scale and the patterns that could emerge. That is where the real solutions are hiding and that is where our committee has been tasked to look and to engage our fellow citizens.
As a volunteer member of the all-volunteer My Bby Hospital committee, I hope Mayor Corrigan and the members of council will reconsider their view of our committee and its working mandate. We sincerely want to engage with Mayor Corrigan and the members of council in a positive, constructive way and have their thoughts, insights and ideas be part of our process.
