Lakers win rugby titles
Burnaby Lake and United rugby clubs each won two championships at the BC Rugby Club Finals on Saturday.
Burnaby Lake's premier division women beat the Velox Valkyries 17-13 to take the Harris Memorial Cup. Melissa Miyazaki scored on an intercept in the match's dying seconds and Becky Querido kicked the conversion to preserve the side's undefeated season.
The first division men's side won the Ceili's Cup, also in dramatic fashion when Brad McHugh tied the match 8-8 with a charge through a line of James Bay defenders in the 80th minute and Nolan Shelley kicked the winning conversion.
The United men won both the Province League 1 and 2 titles, beating Port Alberni 12-8 in the former, and Surrey Beavers 20-15 in the latter. Curtis Griffin scored all three of United's tries against Surrey and was awarded Man of the Match.
Burnaby Lake will have an opportunity to add one more trophy to its display case on Saturday when the women's second division squad plays Nanaimo RFC for the Ged Griffiths Cup at 12 p.m. at Klahanie Park.
