Junior Lakers sunk by Salmonbellies
The New Westminster Salmonbellies let the Burnaby Lakers get away from them for 21 seconds, then went on to pound their crosstown rivals 20-9 in their first meeting of the BC Junior A Lacrosse League season, Tuesday at Queen's Park Arena.
The teams are headed in opposite directions; after losing their first two games of the season, New West has now won seven of their last eight while the Lakers have lost seven of their last eight after winning their first two games.
After Tyler Digby's powerplay goal opened the scoring for the 'bellies four minutes into the first period, Ryan Watson and Jackson Decker scored 47 seconds apart to give the Lakers a 2-1 lead. It was short-lived.
Leif Mydske scored his first of four goals 21 seconds later, igniting a run of 10 straight by the Salmonbellies that buried the Lakers.
New West lead 7-2 at the end of the first period and 15-5 going into the final frame.
Justin Salt also scored four times for the Salmonbellies, while Daniel McQuade had a nine-point night with three goals and six assists.
Decker had a hat trick, and added three assists, to lead the Lakers.
The win moved the Salmonbellies into sole possession of third place, two points behind Victoria but with a game in hand. They'll play that game tonight, against the league-leading Coquitlam Adanacs at the Coquitlam Sports Centre.
Burnaby remains in sixth, tied with Nanaimo. Those teams will face each other Sunday, at Copeland Arena.
