Clan women survive comeback
The SFU Clan survived a late comeback to defeat the Central Washington University Wildcats 70-66 at the West Gym on Thursday.
The victory moved the Clan into a tie for third place in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference.
For most of Thursday's game the Clan seemed well in control. They scored eight of the first 10 points and never trailed in the first half. They were up 35-27 at the break.
The Wildcats started chipping away in the second half, getting to within two with 9:03 left on the clock when the Wildcats' Courtney Johnson sank a three-pointer.
SFU recovered, rebuilding their margin to eight less than three minutes later. But then they ran into foul trouble, and Central Washington took full advantage; with 2:31 left to play, they took their first lead on a pair of free throws by Alex Dunn.
Then it was the Clan's turn to battle back by taking advantage of Wildcats' fouls. Carla Wyman sank a pair of free throws to reclaim the lead and Nayo Raincock-Ekunwe and Erin Chambers also connected on free throws to seal the win.
"We tried to pull away from them and they were able to keep coming back," said SFU guard Marie-Line Petit in a press release. "The conference is so tight right now. If you lose one, you might drop three spots in the standings. We have to be focused and ready to play every single game."
The Clan play their final home game of the season tonight, when they host Northwest Nazarene Crusaders in their annual Pink Zone game to raise money for breast cancer research. Tip off is at 7 p.m. in the West Gym.
