Raincock-Ekunwe steals win for Clan women

Nayo Raincock-Ekunwe continues to pile up the points and rebounds for the SFU Clan women's basketball team. But it was a steal with time running out that preserved a 50-49 victory over the Montana State University-Billings Yellowjackets on Thursday.

With the Clan clinging to a one-point margin late in the game after the Yellowjackets' Bobbi Knudsen hit a clutch three-pointer, SFU coughed up the ball again with 22 seconds left on the clock only to have Raincock-Ekunwe, who led all Clan scorers with 20 points and 17 rebounds, steal it right back and draw a foul with five seconds to play.

It was a dramatic finish to a game that had remained close through its entirety.

After SFU's Chelsea Reist opened the scoring, the Yellowjackets netted the next eight. But the Clan charged right back with a 10-4 run to tie it at 12 with 11:46 to play in the first half. They led 27-23 at the break.

The teams battled closely through the second half until Kristina Collins hit a three-pointer with 1:24 left in the game to stake SFU to a four-point advantage. It proved to be just enough breathing room.

The win was the Clan's 11th Great Northwest Athletic Conference victory against six losses. They close out their regular season schedule tonight in Seattle against the Seattle Pacific Falcons. A win would clinch third place in the conference.
