Burnaby Lake Rugby Club’s women’s premier league squad downed United Rugby Club 22-12 last Saturday to advance to the league final this weekend.

They will play the Velox Valkyries from Victoria at Klahanie Park in West Vancouver on Saturday at 11 a.m.

Velox head into the showdown with a perfect 9-0 record on the season while Burnaby, the defending champions, is 8-1. Burnaby Lake’s Julia Sugawara finished second in overall scoring in the league.

“They are an undefeated team that has lost to us in provincial finals and it will be hard to match Velox’s motivation,” said Burnaby Lake head coach Walter Brandl in a press release. “Both teams run the ball well and that part of the game may even have to wait until the introductions are complete up front. The hardest working people on Saturday may be the trainers for both teams.

“Julia and Laura (Harmes) comprise the Yin-and-Yang of our team. Julia is so calm under pressure that it is sometimes infuriating. Laura has lifted her game and turned back the hands of time 10 years. Her speed is as good as it ever was and her level of aggression has always been top notch.”

Although they were the lowest seed heading into the playoffs, Burnaby Lake defeated the Meralomas 39-27 last Saturday to capture the second division women’s championship.

Nancy Radman, Kathleen Grudzinski and Alya Govorchin all scored two tries each for Burnaby Lake while Tian Coutts had one and Rebecca Querido kicked two penalties.

Burnaby Lake, which held a 15-10 lead at halftime, went into the semifinals as the No. 4 seed with a 2-6 record.

The men’s premier league team was edged 23-21 by James Bay in last weekend’s semifinals. In men’s first division semifinal action, the Castaway Wanderers downed Burnaby Lake 24-10.
