Chekanovych beats Bruins in pool
Burnaby’s Mariya Chekanovych was the only Simon Fraser University swimmer to win a race for the Clan in a duel meet with NCAA Division I powerhouse UCLA Bruins in Los Angeles on Saturday.
The Burnaby Central grad won the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:02.4, almost three seconds ahead of the fastest swimmer from UCLA, which is ranked 12th in the NCAA.
On Friday, SFU won a pair of dual meets in California defeating Pomona Pitzer College and California Baptist University. Chekanovych won the 100-yard breast and 200-yard individual medley, as well as swimming on the winning 200-yard medley relay team against Pomona Pitzner. Against California Baptist she won another relay and the 200-yard breaststroke.
The Clan and Chekanovych will travel north to take on the University of Alaska-Fairbanks Nanooks Friday and Saturday.
